Alev Erkilet gave a talk titled “Gender Discussions in the world and in Turkey”

Assoc. Prof. Alev Erkilet, Sociology department faculty member, has taken a part in the first volume of a four-volume series titled “Against a Different Life: Issues, Concepts and Names in Islamist Journals After 1980,”

In the event organized by İstinye University Sociology Department, Dr. Ayça Yılmaz Deniz gave a talk titled “Working Experience in Turkey and the Issue of Becoming a Subject.”

Sociology Department Head Assis. Prof. Ömer Ersin Kahraman gave a presentation titled "La subjectivation et l’évidence de concurrence au travail. [The Manifestness of Becoming a Subject and Rivalry in the Workplace]”

Assoc. Prof. Alev Erkilet, Sociology department faculty member, has written a book chapter titled “The transformation of privacy: Headscarf practices becoming a subject of taste” in the book titled “Tastes: The Reflections of Social Transformation in Daily Life,” coming out of Nobel Yayıncılık.

Vahide Ulusoy Gökçek, lecturer at Department of Psychology, addressed parents in Acıbadem Hasan Tan İlköğretim Okulu as a guest of Parents' Academy in November 12th. During her speech on "Psychological Problems and Undesirable Behaviors", she explained basic mental and developmental needs of school-age children, and their possible achievements when they embrace a secure social environment. She emphasized the importance of the communication between parents-teacher-counseling service triangle to prevent such mental problems and undesirable behaviors.

Vahide Ulusoy Gökçek, lecturer at Department of Psychology, gave a speech with title of "How can we protect our children from abuse?" in the Support Center For Family, Women and Disabled People, held by Municipality of Zeytinburnu. She mentioned the kinds of violence, and qualities of secure social environment. She highlighted the basic needs and rights of children, and also underlined that prevention from abuse starts at home and in the relationship with parent.

This talk which is conducted bu Departments of Psychology and Social Services, delivers a (social) psychological perspective on sexual violence. After (1) covering national and international prevalence rates of sexual violence, (2) measurement methods for assessing the occurrence of sexual violence are thematized. Then (3) causes (i.e., risk factors) and (4) consequences of sexual violence are addressed. Hereafter (5) own research on the effect of rape myth acceptance (i.e., attitudes toward sexual violence) on third party judgment of rape cases is presented. The talk finishes by (6) presenting various intervention strategies.

Dr. Leyla Işık Lavrauw, Head of the Department of Mathematics at Istinye University’s Faculty of Arts and Sciences, gave a speech entitled “Maximum-Order Complexity and Correlation Measures” at the COGENT (Combinatorics, Geometry and Number Theory) workshop organized by the University of Canterbury’s School of Mathematics and Statictics in New Zealand.

Prof. Nermin Gözükırmızı, head of Istinye University Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics, participated in "I. Congress of Geneticists" in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina with international participation between 2-4 October as an invited speaker.

TÜBİTAK 2209 Scientific Research Projects of Alaaddin Korkut, Abdullah Karaman, Buse Meriç Açar and Hümeyra Karaca who are our undergraduate students of the Molecular Biology and Genetics Department of İstinye University, were accepted. We congratulate our students for their great success.

On July 18, 2019, the Departments of Economics, Sociology and International Relations jointly organized a panel titled "Seeking an Alternative Economy". In the panel, Dr. Melik Ertuğrul, Dr. Çiğdem Gürsoy, Dr. Suat Eren Özyiğit and Sociology Department Head Dr. Ömer Ersin Kahraman made presentations.

Prof. Rita Krespi Ülgen attended the 1st Istanbul Health Sciences Congress held on 21-22 June 2019 at Istinye University. Prof. Krespi Ülgen gave a seminar entitled "Stress: The Wind That Blows My Sail" in the "Mental Health" Panel moderated by Prof. Arzu Razak Özdinçler. In her speech, she discussed the positive and negative effects of stress and post-traumatic growth within the context of chronic physical illness.

Istinye University Department of Turkish Language and Literature lecturers Dr. Feyzi Cimen and Dr. Mehmet Ali Gündoğdu participated in INCSOS 5th International Social Sciences Symposium with one paper each.

Assoc. Dr. Alev Erkilet published an article titled "Is there a negative impact of the Islamic world in the formation of Islamophobia?" in the magazine of "Din ve Hayat" prepared by İstanbul Müftülüğü. A Panel entitled "Islamophobia or Hostility to Islam" organized for this special issue concerning Islamophobia. Erkilet was one of the panelists. The moderator of the panel was the Mufti of Istanbul, Prof. Dr. Hasan Kamil Yılmaz and other panelists were Dr. Ejder Okumus and Prof. Dr. Bayram Ali Çetinkaya. The panel was held at Üsküdar Municipality Bağlarbaşı Congress and Culture Center on June 26th at 14:30. Alev Erkilet made a speech about the emergence of the term Islamophobia and she evaluated Islamophobia as a form of stereotypical threat against Muslims. On the other hand, she drew attention to the relationship between Islamophobia and the internal affairs of the Islamic world.
